Abstract:

Contains two handwritten letters to a friend back home concerning J. William Schuchert's life in California. In the first letter (3 p.), dated Oct. 22,1852, Schuchert describes his overland trip to California, the town of Marysville, California, including finding work as a barkeeper in the City Hotel, news about some of the gold miners having great success, and news about other persons from Chester, Illinois who had also come to California. In the second letter (4 p.), dated Feb. 24, 1853, Schuchert is now the owner of the City Hotel and describes how he acquired it from the previous owner and the terms of their agreement. He also gives more news about the doings and whereabouts of "our Chester Gold Hunters." Contains the original mailing envelope used for the Feb. 24, 1853 letter. Also includes typescript transcriptions of each letter.

J. William Shuchert (1832-1908) was born in Germany and emigrated with his family to the United States in 1848. In 1852, he left his home in Chester, Illinois for the gold fields of California returning in 1858. In 1881, he was elected the mayor of Chester, Illinois.
